Masking tape for anodize without chromating first

We are looking for masking tape that can adhere to a flat surface without chromating the part first.

Finish is either Type II anodize or Type III hardcoat anodize.

Our experience tells us we need to chromate the part before masking to get the masking to adhere well, BUT, we have seen customers send us in pieces already masked, which were not chromated & the masking held up fine. We warned them because they masked it we wouldn't be responsible if the mask failed, but it has not failed. For some reason they don't know or wish to tell us what the masking material is.

Anyone have a product to recommend?

Dave,

We've had pretty good success with a lead tape (I don't recall the tape #)..it has excellent adhesion. A word of caution...do not have your contact points touching the tape.. it will burn severely. Unfortunately.. the tape residue can also be a little cumbersome to remove...but it sure sticks good! ...anyone that carries 3M tapes should be able to get it for you.
