Stabilizer for hydrogen peroxide

Q. I wanted to say that we use hydrogen peroxide in the stainless steel pickling process which decomposes very fast. Do we have some stabilizer that we can use with it?

A. You give very little info as to what you are doing or trying to accomplish. Basically iron is one of the most active decomposing elements for hydrogen peroxide. "Dequest" in conjunction with other standard stabilizers will assist.

? Dear Dr. Mittal,

To enable us to suggest a suitable stabilizer system for Hydrogen Peroxide, please tell us the exact composition of your stainless steel pickling bath.

A. I definitely agree that Dequest 2060 will stabilize H202 even in an alkaline system, provided the right chemistry is used to raise the pH, i.e., some chelate such as Versenex 80 or weak base such as NH4.

Q. However, Dequest is extremely corrosive to aluminum even at levels of .1 wt%. Does anyone know of a corrosion inhibitor that is effective at stopping this corrosion? Keeping in mind the free oxygen released when H202 comes in contact with active metals such as Mg is also a problem separate from the effects of Dequest. Sodium Meta Silicate will prevent the corrosion of both the Aluminum and Magnesium but is not stable when combined with H202 even though several sources describe SMS as a stabilizer for H202. All this being said my question is; does anyone know of a way to add Sodium Meta Silicate and some stabilizer that will prevent it from causing the H202 to react and not induce a corrosion environment into the solution?

A. One of the ways to stabilize H202 is to add Pure silver in Ionic form. This will not only stabilize the H202 it also gives catalytic effect by making H202 10 times more stronger.

Q. I was just searching about stabilization of hydrogen peroxide at high temperature (50 to 75 °C). I found some stabilizers on the internet which includes - phenol, acetanilide, sodium stannate, tetrasodium phosphate (for biological purpose), Mg and Ca (for bleaching purpose), PO4 for general purpose. Can anybody please tell me which stabilizer I can use for 65 °C? I am doing Chalcopyrite leaching with peroxy sulfuric acid. Is ethylene glycol an H202 stabilizer?

Thank you

A. Tartrazine is also used as an oxygen stabilizer for Hydrogen Peroxide when it is used as a bleach.

Q. What would be the recommended concentration of Silver ions to H2O2 for the best optimized catalytic effect on peroxide action?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Ed. note: This site focuses on industrial metal finishing, so it is probably not the most productive place to post inquiries about bleaching cotton, tooth gels, skin creams and disinfectants. But good luck.
