Brass cleaning

We have several pieces of brass that we recovered from our house fire four years ago.

The question now is, clean or throw out. Has anyone got a good solution for cleaning. This is not just a tarnish.

Thanks for any help.

Non destructive blasting (glass beads, walnut shell media [on eBay or Amazon] ) should clean off most of the heavier residue. Then use fine polishing compound (preferably on a buffing wheel) to bring the finish back to its original luster. Use a clear coat (lacquer or enamel) to protect from future tarnishing.
