Electroless Nickel Bond Strength Problems

We make molds out of 2024 Aluminum. Our Electroless Nickel vendor has had problems getting strong adhesion of the nickel to the aluminum. The nickel will flake or peel off. What can be done to give a stronger bond? Does post heat treating improve bond strength?

Thanks,

2024 is not the best alloy for plating . In fact it is one of the poorer alloys. A 6000 series or even some cast alloys will give much better plating results.2024 can be and is plated. When it has to be stripped or reworked, wich happens much more often than on 6000 series Al., it has an etched apperance and is not the same. It is advisable to put a little more time and money into an alloy better suited for plating.
