Hard Chrome Plating Alternatives

Dear Sir/Ms.,

We are producing a ~20,000 RPM steel shaft.

We are currently using hard-chrome-plating, on both shaft ends, to get low wear, corrosion resistance and accurate dimensions.

The shaft is ground after plating to get exact measurements (~±0.01)

We are looking for an alternative procedure.

Can you advise?

With thanks,

Arik Ring

Have you considered HVOF/ Metal Spray? We have moved quite a few of our shaft parts from hard chrome plating to metal spray or HVOF (high velocity oxy fuel)for environmental reasons. It has to be outside diameters/line of sight. It can be ground to size also.

Thank you for your reply, we have considered these options, but they seem uneconomical, we are now considering Electroless-Nickel or simple solutions, such as carbonization and Nitriding (inferior in coefficient of friction).

Please advise.
