Spec Zinc Coating ASTM A153

I am trying to find the spec for zinc coating ASTM A153 [link by ed. to spec at TechStreet] , Grade 'C'. My customer is needing this process on .688 hex part.

Appreciate any help.

Hello Bonnie!

ASTM A153 [link by ed. to spec at TechStreet] , "Standard Specification for Zinc Coating (Hot-Dip) on Iron and Steel Hardware", is available from the American Society for Testing and Materials ( This three page specification is found in ASTM Volume 01.06 [link by ed. to spec at TechStreet]. The website gives more information.

There is no "Grade C" listed, but there is a "Class C", referring to coating thickness. Class C calls out 1 ounce per square foot thickness, which translates to about 1.7 mils. The specification further covers the quality of zinc used, the sampling procedure, and test methods.

Good luck!

Hello Bonnie,

I have the same problem. Our customer requires ASTM A153 [link by ed. to spec at TechStreet] and additional ASTM B117 [link by ed. to spec at TechStreet] and ASTM B487 [link by ed. to spec at TechStreet]. Did you find anything. For me in Germany it is not easy to get all these American specifications.

Thank you in advance.

Ed. note: We've linked these specs to a commercial source from which you can get them, Uwe.
