Brass plated silver wire turns black: effective fix

Summary for brass plated silver wire Discussion

Brass plated silver wire turns black over time, and Ramesh Pandit asked what could be done after a brass plate on silver thread was rinsed and then treated with potassium bichromate to produce a golden yellow color. He reported that the finish looked rich at first but turned black after about 30 days. In response, one answer asked for more detail about the product because the best fix depends on whether the wire must remain conductive; that reply noted lacquer might help, but would not be suitable if conductivity is required, and warned that bichromate on jewelry is an absolute no-go. Later, Gurudatta Thakur advised using post-plating water-based lacquers or sealants, saying they would definitely solve the problem. The thread therefore points to sealing the plated wire as the practical remedy, with the caveat that the application matters.

Q. hi
I am brass plating on silver thread (wire) and then rinsing, and afterwards potassium bichromate solution plating on brass plated threads (wire) this process receives “golden yellow” rich color (without using gold metal), but problem is this product after 30 days is turning from gold color to black. What can I do?

A. Hi Ramesh. Please tell us what the product is, so we know what potential solutions are available. For example, lacquer may help, but is not a viable solution if the wire needs conductivity. I hope this is not jewelry … bichromate on jewelry is an absolute “no go”.
