Repainting a plastic statue

I received a statue of the Virgin Mary which I am sure is in plastic and was outside the church all the time. Now they're asking me to redo the painting of the statue. Do I need to sand, base coat and then paint? what kind of base coat, paint, sealer shall I use? Can I use acrylic paint?....

First of all, find out what the statue is made from and then decide what paint is best suited for the substrate. You are currently looking for problems that may not exist. If it is plastic, you should be able to get away with a good acrylic paint, but if it is metal, you will need to pretreat it. Since it is to be repainted, we can safely assume the substrate can be painted.

Sorry! Finishing.com is temporarily Read-Only.
Ted Mooney is retiring but I have several offers to take it over.
We're working hard to make sure we find it the best new home.
