"Trichrome" / "Trivalent Chromium Plating"

Chrome has traditionally, and is still predominantly, plated from a bath of chromic acid (hexavalent chrome).

Hexavalent chromium is toxic and carcinogenic. To improve safety and reduce environmental hazard, plating baths have been developed which are based on the more benign trivalent chromium.
