Most plating solutions incorporate organic addition agents, sometimes just called "brighteners", for brightening, leveling, and related purposes.

Excessive temperatures, excessive additions, or imbalances can use these organics to change form ( disintegrate, devolve, mutate, or however we wish to describe it) into useless organic byproducts which often float on the surface of the plating tank.
