Acid treatments, electroplating, and some other processes can generate atomic hydrogen which can invade the grain structure of a metal and cause a phenomenon called 'hydrogen embrittlement' which turns the metal weak and brittle.

In many but not all cases the problem can be cured by immediately baking the com[onents to drive out the hydrogen.]
