Anodes are sometimes slabs of the metal we wish to plate onto the components ('stick anodes'), but sometimes the anode material is balls or chunks which are put into perforated anode baskets (which are often made of titanium, but sometimes steel if the plating solution in question doesn't corrode steel).

Regardless of whether the metal is in slabs or chunks, small particles of it can break off and, if they end up on the parts, cause roughness. Most of the time this potential roughness is counteracted in either or both of two ways:
- The plating solution is continuously filtered.
- The anode slabs or baskets are placed inside a porous or woven 'anode bag' made of (polypropylene, dynel, or sometimes cotton) in the fashion of a pillowcase with a draw string on top, which catches and traps those particles.
