Corrosion Prevention for Phosphorus Bronze?

Q. I need a Corrosion protecting coating for Phosphor Bronze (ASTM C-907) parts that are submerged in filtered tap water in a highly magnetic environment (MRI) The coating has to be non-magnetic wear resistant and corrosion resistant.

Thanks

A. Dear friend,

You have not given the application of the part. But I think you should approach for nickel plating 8-10 micron if you do not req. the conductivity property.

Best of luck.

A. Hi Nitzan. High phosphorous electroless nickel should meet all the needs you described. Good luck.

Corrosion Tests for Phosphor Bronze?

Q. Is there any corrosion resistance test (salt spray, etc.) for components made of phosphor bronze? Also, what will happen if phosphor bronze components are exposed to atmosphere / not packed well in polythene covers?

A. Hi Cowkur. Thread 46092 addresses your 2nd question of packaging in polythene with a detailed actual case including photos :-)

Q. Hi all,

Does anyone have any experience or ever heard of passivating phosphorus bronze per ASTM A967 or QQ-P-35C [link is to free spec at Defense Logistics Agency, dla.mil] ? Usually this is only on stainless.

Thanks in advance,
Bernard R. Negrin

A. It doesn't sound right to me, Bernard. Copper, brass, and bronze can receive a chromate conversion coating, however -- which is sometimes called passivation by some people. Any chance this is the origin of their question?

thumbs up sign Hi!

Thanks for responding! I have a customer whose drawing states passivation ASTM A967 or QQP35. But the parts are made of phosphor bronze.

I told them that passivation to those specs are only for stainless and we would not be able to certify to them.

They emailed a copy of the Metal Finishing Guidebook section for "Chromate Conversion". So, I think they are confused as to what passivation is.
