How Do I Blacken Niobium?

Hi!

I am looking to create a bio-compatible black finish (matt or polished) to small niobium parts (jewelry). I have heard this is done by heating with a torch then following a particular cooling process.

1) what types of gases are recommended
2) details of the cooling process
3) am I completely lost?!?
