Simple Gold Plating

Would like to know in detail about plating gold using the simplest method possible. Is nickel the only metal to use with gold? I would like to gold plate the trim on my automobile. The dealerships want an exhorbitant amount of money for this process. I have been trying to gather info on this from libraries, etc. but nothing much out there I could find. Thanks for any help.
