You question does not mention anything specific about heat treatment of steel. There are many process of heat treament and some of them are :

Carburizing
Nitriding
Nitrocarburizing
Carbonitriding
Oxinite process
flame hardening
Austenizing - Annealing--Spherodizing--normalizing etc.etc.

Details about these process may be found in some metallurgical text books.
