Yellow Zinc vs. Yellow Chromate

I am trying to find an answer for a friend in China. She asks, "Are Yellow Chromate and Yellow Zinc, the same finish? If not what are the differences?" Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Essentially, they are the same thing.

When you talk about a plating, there are actually two parts to it. There is the base plating and the conversion coating that goes on top to help the plating perform better. Zinc yellow plating can be described as electroplated zinc with yellow chromate on top of it. This chromate is also referred to as dichromate. So, zinc yellow is the name of the whole plating system while yellow chromate is a part of that system.

Because of the introduction of CR3 reduced chromium passivates yellow passivate could be replaced by a colour wash.
