A lot will depend on the quality of wood and its outgassing properties in vacuum. Place the wood (about 10 to 15 cm dia. x 20 to
30 cm long) in vacuum under milliTorr pressure and see if the evacuation holds when all valves are closed. If you see the pressure rises more that a couple of milliTorr per min, you have a problem. If all is ok, find a suitable varnish, apply it and cure it thoroughly.
