Steel sealant for cold rolled countertop

Q. Our church has made a new Welcome Center with a cold rolled steel countertop with a brushed finish. What is the best way to seal it for durability and letting the design show?

A. Hi Amy,

That is a beautiful countertop! Keep it air-conditioned until fully coated, and I'd suggest at least two thin coats, preferably three, rather than a thick coat, because steel rusts very easily and coatings will have pin holes, porosity, thin spots, or simply areas that were missed when coating.

There are hundreds of different possible coatings and we like to suggest types of coatings rather brands or sources ( huh? why?) but Protectaclear from Everbrite [a finishing.com supporting advertiser], which is used on jewelry is one possibility

Luck & Regards,
