Uncoated carbon steel and 96-hour salt spray test

October 25, 2019

Q. Which carbon steel without any coating can withstand 96 Hrs Salt spray test as per ASTM B117 [affil. link to spec at Techstreet]

A. Hi Manikanda. Uncoated carbon steel cannot survive a salt spray test.

However, there may be a "semantics" issue. Carbon steel is the major component in most stainless steels, but they contain other ingredients like chrome, nickel, and molybdenum and they are not called "carbon steel"; that term is reserved for steels without those ingredients.
