Summary for rough sandy electrocoat Discussion
Rough/sandy electrocoat on one side of a flat part is the issue Bradley Hopkins raised for a stamped, vibro-finished, washed, and dip electrocoated 1/8" x 2 1/2" x 4" HR plate hung at an angle and racked multiple parts per row. He reported that one side looked dull, rough, and sandy while the opposite side was acceptable. The only answer in the thread came from Avinash Vidhate, who suggested the coater should use or change the filter bags as required and also make sure the job is washed thoroughly after phosphating. His advice points to contamination or filtration/process cleanliness as likely areas to check, rather than a confirmed root cause. No other causes were discussed in the excerpt, so the thread mainly recommends verifying filtration and post-phosphate washing and then reviewing the results.
Q. I am in the stamping business and know next to nothing about electrocoating. We are having issues with coating on a flat plate part (1/8″ x 2 1/2″ x 4″ HR). The part is hung at an angle during the process. They are also racked multiple parts per row per rack.
Process of part is stamp the part, vibro the part, wash the part (powder coat line wash), coat the part.
The part is electro-coated using a dip operation. The defect we are experiencing is one side of the parts has a rough/sandy/dull texture and appearance. The opposite side is the opposite (acceptable coating). What could be the cause of this issue? Please let me know if any additional information would help.
Thanks
