Summary for nickel plated appliances Discussion
Nickel plated appliances is the focus of this thread, where Mary Allain says her new refrigerator and stove have nickel plating decoration that is leaving etching streaks, and the manufacturer recommended Maas metal polish, which did not help. In response, the answerer says photos would help clarify what she means by “etching streaks,” but explains that true etching is not a surface stain that can be cleaned away. If the plating has been attacked and pitted, the only possible remedy is mechanical polishing to level the surrounding metal down to the deepest pits, and even that may not be possible if the plating is too thin. The answerer also suggests the issue could be a poor plating job rather than something removable with polish.

A. Hi Mary.
Photos might help us more clearly understand what you mean by “etching streaks”.
Etching is not something that you can clean, etching meaning the plating is pitted from having been attacked by something. Mechanical polishing, to bring the rest of the metal down to the level of the deepest pits is all you can do and the plating may not be thick enough to do that. Perhaps you have a really bad plating job?
