Repairing enameled cast iron

June 15, 2015

Q. We have a loved "Cooks" brand enameled cast iron cooking pot that has lost a chip of enamel finish about 3/4" in diameter. It is subjected to substantial heat for searing etc. and cooks our bean based dishes wonderfully. Is there any hope of a repair?

Hi Garry. The "enamel" is not a paint, but is porcelain melted onto the pot at very high temperature. There probably is no practical repair. But on the other hand, the exposed cast iron should pose no issues except perhaps a little rust which you can wipe off.
