Cadmium Plated Nuts with Zinc-Nickel Bolts

June 3, 2015

Q. I work for a company that designs custom equipment and we had a customer request all hardware that would resist galvanic corrosion. They requested we used zinc-nickel hardware, but we are having issues getting good quality lock nuts with a zinc nickel finish.

So I am wondering if Cadmium plated nuts and Zinc-Nickel plated hardware will cause any issues.

A. Hello Mr Strauss,

The combination may work well in mild conditions but for an an outdoor wet environment condition, it be better if either the nut or bolt was painted over the Cadmium plating. Cadmium won't leach that way nor powder jam up.
