304SS or 316SS for handling Dry Granular Salt

June 2, 2015

Q. I am putting together a system to handle dry, granular salt. We are having an 'intense' discussion about whether to use 304 or 316 for the product contact. All of our machines in the humid area of the plant are going to be 316, but this piece is in a dry area and does not store salt, it is only a pass through. Thoughts?

A. Sam,
You've got the right idea that the humid areas are more troublesome and need to have the 316. So for the dry area, I guess you have to ask yourself, when you say "dry", is it bone dry, or just drier compared to the humid zone? How much would you save on materials using 304 versus the potential trouble of dealing with corrosion in the pass-through a few years down the line?
