Preparation of Titanium and CRES steel for primer application

May 12, 2015

Q. I am reviewing two specifications for the application of epoxy primer and of fluid resistant primer to titanium parts and CRES parts. I am interested in opinions on the extended time "aluminum conversion coating" option.

The preparation prior to application is:

CRES Steel

Vapor or sand blasting, or hand abrading surfaces. 5/
or
Chemical conversion coating per (a Class 1A - type alumuinum conversion coating) for 30-45 minutes while periodically keeping these surfaces wet within the solution. There will be no visible color change, so care must be taken to adhere to the time requirements. 1/

Titanium

Vapor or sand blasting, or hand abrading surfaces. 5/
or
Chemical conversion coating per (a Class 1A - type alumuinum conversion coating)for 30-45 minutes while periodically keeping these surfaces wet within the solution. 1/

NOTES:
1/ Primer must be applied as soon as possible, but not before (1) hour after completion of the chromate conversion coating, on dry clean surfaces. If the items are not immediately painted (after 1 hour), they must be wrapped with Kraft paper or plastic film (per para. 7.8.3) and masking tape to prevent their contamination. If the primer is not applied within 72 hours, strip and reprocess the chemical surface treatment.
5/ Primer must be applied within 48 hours after completion of blasting.
