Removing Iron from 80% percent pure Platinum

April 1, 2015

Q. I have some Pt bars that are 80% pure Pt, and want to remove the iron with flux.

A. Dear sir,
If you can roll that platinum into thin sheet, then treat it with HCl or simply dissolve in aqua regia and do the platinum refining process.

Q. We tried that and the results did not make the assay. The assayor suggests fluxes to remove the iron but we have no idea of which flux or the combination to use.

A. Dear sir, you have to refine that ore using aqua regia. So roll it, remove the iron using nitric acid (Pd dissolves in nitric acid, don't throw it). You will get the pure Pt; dissolve in aqua regia.

Ted Mooney is retiring but I have several offers to take it over.
We're working hard to make sure we find it the best new home.
