Rust Proofing Nails: Safe, Smart Options for Bed of Nails

Summary for rust proofing nails Discussion

Rust proofing nails for a bed of nails is the central concern here: Igor Petrusky asks how to protect 100 lbs of 8" x 3/8" steel spikes in humid Florida so they won’t rust or contaminate any scratch on skin. He says chrome plating or electroless nickel plating are possible but too time-consuming and expensive, and asks about safer alternatives such as lacquer dipping. The excerpt provided contains only the question, so no named answerers or specific recommendations appear in the source. The practical issue is balancing corrosion resistance with biological safety for direct human contact, while avoiding finishes that could chip, flake, or irritate skin. Because no replies are shown, the thread excerpt does not establish a final solution or consensus.

Q. Hello dear experts,
I would like to hear your opinion / suggestions on the best way to rust proof steel nails for use on the bed of nails. I bought 8″ by 3/8th inch spikes which are steel, and here in Florida they will rust. Since I will be laying on the bed of nails, I definitely do not want rust to get into a scratch, etc., so I intend to protect the nails in some way. The last resort option would either be chrome plating or electroless nickel plating, but both tend to be time consuming end expensive. Any suggestions on alternative means to rust proof in biologically safe manner 100 lbs of 8″ x 3/8th nails? Maybe dipping in lacquer?

Thanks ahead.
