How to do weathered steel finish on stainless steel fixtures

April 7, 2014

Q. Hi,
I'm interested if anyone knows of a method to produce a weathered finish on stainless steel, similar to the one in the pictures below. The images are of a mock-up faucet made of plain steel pipe that was sanded /wire brushed.

Would acid etching produce random darkened, textured or pitted surfaces? The intent is for the production of stainless steel fixtures made using approved stainless steel (I believe any 300 series SS), with a weathered appearance similar to the photos.

Thanks,

Dan

A. There's going to be some....should I call it "artistry"? involved, but a soak in Muriatic acid (available at building supply stores), followed by rinsing, drying, and then rubbing with 00 steel wool ⇦ on eBay or Amazon [affil link] and oil after letting them dry (and rust) for a few days might get close.
