Electroforming with gems/minerals - resist from electrolyte?

Q. My first attempt at electroforming copper onto a crystal was heartbreaking- my apophyllite crystal dissolved! What can I use to protect items from the acid bath that can be successfully removed after the electroforming process is completed?
