What methods and compounds to use for polishing magnesium fluoride

October 16, 2012

Q. I am having severe difficulties with polishing magnesium fluoride. More specifically, the friction seems to be too high, which causes the polishing pan to be thrown off the work by the polishing machine.
At the moment I have tried Gugolz pitch 55 & 64 and synthetic optical pitch "soft".
The polishing compounds used so far are: Polytron 1 & 0, 25µ and liquivem 1µ.
The specs are a roughness under 1nm and flatness less then 1 ring.
Any help or hints would be much appreciated.

A. Hi Niels. Our site focuses on metal finishing rather than the polishing of optics, so I don't know if any readers can help you ... but I guess we'll see :-)
