Gold plating, rose gold plating and rhodium plating on sterling silver

Q. Can anybody tell me the procedure of how to do gold plating and rhodium plating on sterling silver? I am a gold smith, but I have lots of customers requesting plating on their silver jewellery. I don't have any problem with gold plating on gold jewellery, but I figured there is a problem with me when I did gold plating and rhodium on silver. Please help.

A. Hi, Candice. From your success with plating on gold, but not on silver, it sounds like what may be missing is that it is usual to do nickel plating (or white bronze plating) before gold plating unless the gold plating is very very heavy. This barrier layer will prevent diffusion of the silver into the gold plating, and may impart some shine that the silver base isn't offering. Good luck.
