Corrosion resistance of copper, nickel and tin plating on CRCA

May 21, 2012

Q. We have terminal of CRCA material and in order to comply the salt spray of 240 hours , plating specified in sequence as Cu plating : 0.8 microns , Nickel plating : 8 microns and Tin plating : 12 micron.

Our plating supplier has doubt whether above plating specification will satisfy the salt spray testing of 240 hours.

Please provide your opinion on the above matter.

A. Yes it should pass, but the spec is really very outdated. Don't you have a Tin whisker problem with 12 microns as the final coat?
