Alkaline anodising of aluminum vs. sulfuric acid anodising?

What is advantage/disadvantage of alkaline anodising over acid anodising? Will Alkaline anodising give the same sealing quality and anodic thickness as sulfuric acid anodising? Which is cheaper? Pl guide.

Hi Ananth,

You need to be much more specific about your requirements; no one will answer an abstract question about which coating is better than another without having some basic details to go on.

Dear Sir,
We have some enquires for Alkaline Anodising wherein we believe that surface finish is better than conventional sulfuric Acid Anodising. Also, as per the customer, the Anodising cost will far less than the Acid based Anodising. Can present Acid anodising setup be modified to carry out Alkaline Anodising or is a new set up required with all new rectifiers to carry out the same? Cost-wise is it feasible to go for Alkaline Anodising in the present set up. Pl guide.

Hi,
I strongly suspect that there is a misunderstanding here. In many years of involvement in the anodizing industry, I have never heard of a commercial alkaline anodizing process. Is the specification actually calling for alkaline etching followed by sulfuric acid anodizing? Worth a check?

Dear Harry,
In fact there is commercial Alkaline Anodising process as we came to know from Italtecno. We want to know if it is commercially viable with present set up of Acid Anodising.

Hi, Arnanth.

I hadn't heard of it either; this is good to know. If you are speaking solely of a proprietary technology, available from no one else, I think only Italtecno can advise you of its viability.

But sorry, we can't publically praise or condemn a proprietary technology here.

Hi Ananth,

There are a number of alkaline anodising solutions, normally proprietary in nature (such as HAE, Tiodize, Keronite just to mention three).

It really comes down to what properties are important for your application. No-one here is going to say one coating is better than another without knowing what conditions the parts are going to be exposed to.

Do a web search for alkaline anodising solutions and then contact a local supplier for advice. With the potential for new business I am sure they will offer you the support you need.

Dear,

The alkaline anodize and acid anodize really exist different, because they are different skills, but both of them belong to silver anodize; the alkaline is more expensive than acid anodize, about $90/Ton on processing fee.

Our factory produces this kind profiles for windows and doors; the price is very competitive.
