Which surface finishing gives 1000 hours in neutral salt spray?

October 19, 2011

Currently we are doing Zn/Ni plating + Trivalent Chrome yellow passivation. It gives around 240 hours for white rust and 720 hours for red rust. We are interested to improve the salt spray life of plated component to 1000 hours. Can anyone suggest to us which plating or passivation system gives the long NSS life.

Hi, Divahar.

A high quality electroless nickel plating will give 1000 hours, at least on simple surfaces. But so will a moderate quality paint job :-)

There is much more to quality coatings than salt spray hours, which are not indicative of real life expectancy anyway. What is the substrate, the service condition, and the other requirements?
