Pin hole leaks for EN plating

August 29, 2011

We have experienced pin hole leaks that penetrate a 1/4" wall of our CDA 360 brass regulator bodies. The pin holes appear to develop during the electroless nickel RoHS plating process. Leaks are auditable with 100 or more PSI air pressure.

Any ideas of how this could happen would be most appreciated.

I would be happy to discuss more details (part geometry, leaks areas, materials, machining processes etc) with anyone who might shed light on the problem.

Brass is not catalytic in EN so how do you get the part initiated? Also what is the brass alloy? Does it have lead, sulfur, etc.
These elements are poison for EN plating and can cause misplates in these areas.
