-----Dark patches in EN Plating, and possibility of rework
August 8, 2011
Currently, we are trying to EN plating piece part (thickness 6mm, sized 2 ft by 4 ft) made from CRS, the outcome we saw was surface having dark patches.
Part requirement needs the parts to be bright.
We suspect the Ni deposit on the surface failed due to some contaminants still remaining on it, whereas the initial layer etched off causing these dark patches
I want to know how do we go about to reworking the plating on this part?
Question : What are the dark patches, is it oxidizied surface?
Question 2: How to rework to get bright and consistent finishing?

CRS is very easy to prepare and highly receptive for EN. Just make sure it is absolutely clean (water break test) and free of oxides. Of course, make sure your bath chemistry is within your chemical vendors specs.

Hi Bala.
It is fairly easy to plate EN on CRS. Recheck your EN and its operating conditions.
For rework, try polishing a small area of the dark patches with Autosol

. If OK, polish the rest of the area to the same shine. 2 ft x 4 ft is a fairly large area to polish , though, but at least it is one method of rework. Good Luck.
