Need restoration of brass fireplace enclosure

Had a small fire and flue was not open. Melted small stocking onto the brass, plus blackened the outside.
Have been trying to get this removed without damaging the brass. Is there a special way we can do this or is there a contractor that can refinish the outside for us?
Would appreciate any suggestions you may have. We are at our wits' end.
