Rusted stainless steel cable railing

We have a stainless steel cable railing system on our deck that looks out over the river.
The rail system was installed in 2004. The vertical posts are starting to show rust, but the vertical rails are not. We are grateful that only the vertical posts are rusting, but how do we clean the posts and protect from future damage?
