Advantages of Nickel Plating over Chrome Plating in Salty Application

May 21, 2011

Sir / Madamn,

We are into Surface Finish & Plating industry and are regularly performing "Hard Chrome Plating" for various salt or sea based applications. Recently we came across a customer who requires "Nickel - Chrome Plating" for his sea application. The chrome plating we do is very much efficient & we have received very satisfactory feedback from our customers. Now, my question is -
Whether nickel plating proves very efficient for sea or salt based applications?
Are there any published papers or published literature, which mentions that the Nickel Chrome Plating is beneficial for sea or salt applications?

Hi Gaurav,

Hard chrome plating is micro-cracked, this can sometimes cause problems with corrosion resistance, especially if the thickness of plating is not that great. The nickel plating is not micro-cracked so acts as a full barrier coating against corrosion. There are definite benefits for a nickel undercoat.
