Analysis of Silver Solutions Without AA

Q. Has anyone any information on the determination of silver in cyanide plating solutions which do not involve fuming down with nitric/sulfuric acids. I have access to atomic absorption this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] , but an AA is not easy to tuck into a service chemists boot.

A. My "Handbook of Electrode Technology" [on Amazon affil links] by Orion Research says that it can be done by selective ion electrode after a 1:1000 dilution. Since it is a silver-sulfide electrode and two or three standard solutions, it will be subject to some interferences. Accuracy will not match AA, but a probe and a pH meter that will read to 0.1 mV will give quite good information and will fit in the boot of a car and some might fit into a boot. Would that make you a bootlegger? A USA pun intended.

A. You can do silver analysis with X-ray fluorescence equipment. This is the same gear used for plating thickness determination. The trick is that it is no easier to carry around in your boot than is an AA spectrophotometer.
