What is Kesternich Test? SO2 Sulfur Dioxide Corrosion Test? Need to pass 72 hours

RFQ: I'm looking for a source for Kesternich testing per DIN 50018 [affil link]. Does anybody have a reliable lab they can refer me to?

A. Hey Christa,

Kesternich: German scientist who developed the Kesternich Cabinet and test method used for acid rain simulation (DIN 50018 [affil link]).

U.S. INTEC, Inc. tests their Roofing and Building Fasteners using the Kesternich test. Talk to the tech people at U.S. INTEC, Inc. Port Arthur, Texas.

Hope this helps,

Q. I work for a coatings company that has designed a coating for electrical metallic tubing. One of the tests that the coating must pass is corrosion resistance in a moist carbon dioxide/sulfur dioxide-air environment. I have never heard of this test. Has anybody else? Does anybody know who performs this test?

A. Michael - I have a copy of the test I believe you are referencing. If you will give me your fax number,I'd be happy to send it to you. It includes CO2/SO2.

thumbs up sign I would like to get a copy about the corrosion test of metals with CO2 and SO2.

Thanks!

Q. I am working with a coat of copper/nickel, a thickness of 10 microns and 3 microns, without passivation. I know that Kesternich test is very aggressive for such finish but I have read that I can make this test with this finish using only 20 ml of SO2, with this quantity I can see results. I normally work with a bottle of SO2 gas, introducing 0.2 L or 2 L in the Kesternich chamber, so I can't control with this bottle 20 ml that is necessary for the test with a Copper/nickel coat. I read that it's possible to produce SO2 inside the chamber without gas, in another form. Is it possible?, How can I do it? Which are the compounds I need and the quantities for 20 ml?

Q. I would like to know if there are more standards for this kind of test and for artificial atmosphere Salt spray tests.

A. The specifications we use most often are DIN 50018 [affil link], ASTM G87 [affil link] , ASTM G85 [affil link] Annex A4, and ISO 3231 [affil link]. You can purchase the DIN specification at www.global.ihs.com, the ASTM specifications at www.astm.org, and the ISO specification at www.iso.org. They should be available for download.

For the SO2 test you have: IEC 60068-2-42 Kc [affil link]

For the salt spray test you have various methods given in IEC 60068-2-52 Kb [affil link]

or

IEC 60068-2-11 Ka [affil link]

Q. I am working in corrosion testing of Mullite coatings. I wanted to know what is Kesternich test and who can do some testing of my sample.

A. Hello Soobhankar.
Kesternich testing is a common name for sulfur dioxide testing. There are several test methods available. DIN 50018 [affil link], ISO 3231 [affil link], and ASTM G87 [affil link] are some of the more common methods.

Q. I am running Sulfur Dioxide Salt Fog Tests in accordance with ASTM G85 [affil link] -02 Annex 4. Continuous spray with SO2 injection for 1 hour every 6 hours. The pH of the collections should be 2.5-3.2. My pH is consistently 2.0-2.3. I am injecting gas at the rate of 1cc/min/ft3 of chamber volume. The flow meter is calibrated for SO2 so I am confident the flow rate is correct. The chamber was purchased new within the last year. My pH probe is calibrated daily with ph 4,7, and 10 buffer solutions. After calibration I check the ph of a 1.68 buffer solution and range 1.62 to 1.68. Any suggestions why my ph is low.

A. Hello -
Are you metering SO2 based on the nominal cabinet volume, that is, the usable testing space that does not include the cover or other volume not a part of corrosion testing? There is often 50% larger volume to take into account when injecting gas since it diffuses throughout the cabinet regardless of how certain test methods define working volume. But, it is certainly a puzzle why the pH is low. How old is the salt solution - has it had a chance to sit around and drop its pH below 6.5? Perhaps buffering the pH of the salt solution to the high end of neutral - closer to a pH of 7.2 - will help.

Need chrome plating to survive 72-hours of SO2 corrosion testing

Q. We want to develop chrome plating which can withstand SO2 corrosion testing for 72 hours

A. Hi Suvidh. My understanding is that nickel-chrome plating should normally be able to survive three 24-hour Kesternich cycles (72 hours total).

Please introduce yourself and your situation: Are you talking about hard chrome plating (engineering chrome) or decorative nickel-chrome or copper-nickel-chrome plating? Are you a process supplier who will be offering this process for sale to plating shops, or are you a plating shop, or are you a product manufacturer who wants to get your parts plated?

Are your parts currently failing this test? If so, what is the plating specification, and what test specification are you following? Pulse plating of chrome is reputed to decrease porosity and increase Kesternich resistance. Thanks.

Q. MY NAME IS SUVIDH MEHTA LOOKING FOR DEVELOPMENT IN FAUCET MANUFACTURING COMPANY IN INDIA.
WE ARE DOING DECORATIVE CHROME ON FAUCET PARTS
WE HAVE OUR OWN ELECTROPLATING UNIT
ONE OF OUR CUSTOMERS ASK FOR SO2 CORROSION TEST FOR 24 HOURS 3 CYCLE BUT OUR SAMPLE FAILS
WE ARE DOING COPPER 10 MICRON
NICKEL 10 - 25 MICRON
CHROME - 0.20 MICRON MINIMUM
WE OBSERVED CORROSION AFTER 24 HOURS AND SOMETIMES AFTER 48 HOURS

A. Thanks for the follow-up Suvidh. There are three possibilities here:
-- The first is that the overall design of your process is not adequate to deliver three successful cycles, and you will have to upgrade your whole nickel and chrome plating process.
-- The second possibility is that something more minor is wrong and requires adjustment.
-- The third is that the test is not being conducted correctly.

The Kesternich/SO2 test is not particularly common, and I think that makes it hard to find good data for comparison, as well as increasing the likelihood that something is not right in the testing procedure.
So I think something which might be very helpful in making that determination would be the results of some other accelerated corrosion test. Are you doing, or have you recently done, any other corrosion testing like CASS or Corrodkote on the parts?
