Aluminium utensils polishing

Q. Hi
I am from India,
doing aluminium utensil manufacturing.
I want to give my product a chrome finish.
Please suggest.

A. Hi, Deepak.

I assume you mean a mirror polish rather than actual nickel-chrome electroplating?
(Please include your town in your response as we now have three Deepak Agarwals from India who post here and it's getting confusing; people get upset when they see their name here on a posting that they didn't author).

A. If you are looking for a bright shiny finish to the existing material, it has been common practice to run parts in a vibratory machine with porcelain ball media and a good lubricating/polishing compound in a wet process.

A. You must be more clear on what you refer to as Utensils and I need to know quantities and sizes to give you the proper answer.

A. Hi Deepak. Although aluminum will never look like chrome side-by-side (it will be less "blue" and more "white"), it can be quite shiny. Consider doing a nitric-phosphoric acid "bright dip" after manual polishing and before anodizing. You can read a lot about it here by searching the site, but two notes:

- This bright dip is wildly corrosive and it fumes madly -- see it in operation somewhere before you try to install it in your own plant.

- If you want mirror like reflection you must use proper (quite pure) grades of aluminum alloy. ASM Metals Handbook Vol.5 is excellent on this subject of choosing and polishing aluminum alloys for high reflectivity. Good luck.
