Removing poor gold plating from stainless cutlery

Q. We have been given an older 12 place setting of gold plated stainless steel flatware. The gold has totally come off portions of the knives & forks & is stained/worn on many of the other pieces. Is there a way to totally remove the remaining gold that isn't toxic for a homeowner? The set is quite nice & all the pieces are there.

Gold Flatware (Towles Newbury Thread) on eBay (affil link)]

A. One reason gold is prized is because it is so inert. There is no chemical a homeowner can apply that will dissolve gold. You would have to do it with abrasives, which is laborious and messy.

You could take these to a plating shop for stripping, but it might be more cost effective to get them replated.

A. Gold is softer than SS, remove it mechanically (precipitated chalk water mixture must be OK). Very tedious and dirty+needs lot of elbow grease. Any plater which can do gold plate on stainless can remove it too (probably expensive). Hope it helps and good luck!
