How does a penny react in diet 7up?

I'm doing a science fair project and I don't know how diet 7up is supposed to clean or dissolve a penny.

Hi, Diane. Congratulations! You have an opportunity to do an actual science experiment rather then. If you knew the result you were shooting for, that would be called "junk science" and you certainly wouldn't want to do that. So get some pennies, preferably pre-1982 since they will be solid copper, and put them into the soda and start by recording in a lab book anything you see. Our FAQ on Cleaning Pennies may be helpful.
