Use of cast iron borings/turnings in sand blasting

We will like to know if waste material like cast iron turning and boring scraps can be utilized for sand/shot blasting for metal spray applications. As compared to cast iron grit the turnings are very cheap and easily available.

Size, shape and metallurgical makeup will vary wildly. If you are looking for cheap, sieve your own river sand. The results will not be good, but it will be cheap.
