How to tell if chem film was done

April 26, 2010

I recently ordered some custom machined parts with clear chem film. The vendor supplied documentation stating that they finished the parts to MIL-DTL-5541F Type I Class 3 (clear). A few of the parts, however, have a distinctly different appearance than the rest. They are brighter, shinier, and generally like unfinished aluminum. How can I tell whether these parts were really chem-filmed or not?

The parts will be used on a test fixture in an electronics factory. The conductivity of their surfaces is needed, which drove us to spec chem film instead of anodizing.

Thanks,

One of the chromate suppliers also sells a spot test kit.
