How to get a matte surface before aluminum anodizing?

My customer provide a aluminum tube sample which is clear anodized, with a matte surface, but not from sanding. It's said to be chemical pre-treated before anodizing. How to get a matte surface with chemical treatment? Thanks a lot.

Hi, Michael. Probably just caustic etching followed by desmutting.
