-----RoHS Compliance for Nickel Plating
February 6, 2010
Hello
I am Jacob from India, manufacturing brass cable glands and other electrical accessories.
I would like to know if there is any standard or procedure for nickel plating to meet RoHS Standards.
We normally have our products electroplated externally and our suppliers have no testing equipments to test the plating quality, plating thickness. We would also like to invest in such testing equipments in-house.
A detailed guidance on this subject would help me in reducing hazardous substances used in our daily application components.
Regards

Dear Jacob,
Nickel plating alone will not create any problem for ROHS,
If you are using any Cr6 passivation after nickel plating for sealent purpose or increase the Corrosion hours, that should be avoided.
Instead of Cr6 passivation, go for Cr3 passivation.
For measuring the Cr6 amount, better do it in Chemical analysis lab (normally they will strip the entire nickel plating and they will measure the Cr6 amount by volumetric analysis )
