A. In zinc oxide manufacturing by French process muffle furnace with silicon carbide crucibles are used. You can do sizing of furnace by production capacity you required. On basis of capacity you can select crucible size to 1 MT metal holding, combustion system etc.

Q. Dear Sir,

I am dealing with ceramic raw-material and chemical. We have to make project on a chemical plant.

So I have selected ZINC OXIDE POWDER making plant which is useful in making ceramics, etc.

I have to make total process for making zinc oxide powder.
I have some of the question regarding this which are as follows

1) What is the process of making zinc oxide powder?
2) What type of machinery is required for making it?
3) From which Material it requires?
4) At what temperature it should be melt?
5) Where can we use it? (state all the useful area)
6) If you have any picture of plant, please send it to me?

Zinc fumes from Zinc Oxide Manufacturing

Q. I work at the manufacturing plant of Zinc Oxide, we use the French Process of manufacturing of Zinc Oxide.

As per the update from the Environment & Forest Department, Govt of India, we have been advised to ensure that the zinc fumes are not released in the air.

We have been working to upgrade our plant with regards to the same.

I have learnt from our lab chemists that in case we pass zinc fumes through water before releasing them in the air. The zinc fumes will dissolve in the water & the air let out of the chimney will be zinc free & hence non-hazardous.

Is that true?

Is there any other way to go ahead & upgrade the factory to ensure that zinc fumes are not released in the air?

A. Hi Aparna,
I am a chemical engineer and working in zinc oxide field for last 8 years. And presently working as consultant for zinc oxide.
As per your problem, you should not go for water scrubbing of zinc oxide fumes.
Your chemist has no idea of insolubility of zinc oxide in water. It is only 45 ppm.
After scrubbing zinc oxide in water, you will get zinc oxide mud, which is difficult to dispose and will give you problem by pollution control board.
The best way to handle zinc oxide fumes is to filter them with highly efficient filters.
We are using fume extraction system equipped with compound hood, ducting, bag filters and blower. It is used to catch any kind of fugitive fumes like while charging, skimming of metal, crucible cleaning, etc. activities.
